II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    The programme is closely focused on basic needs and poverty alleviation.
  2. Activities / contents
    While the Programme provides support to health, education and capacity building, in 1997 over half the budget was devoted to Rural Development with all projects in this sector located in the remote and poor mountain districts of the country. The programme also places emphasis on involvement in the Productive Sector and on Human Rights and Democracy.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Improvement in the standard of living of the poorest sectors of the population of Lesotho ie primarily those who live in the remote mountain areas of the country.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The Lesotho Country Programme is in line with the policies set out in "Challenges and Opportunities Abroad: White Paper on Foreign Policy" published by the Government of Ireland in 1996.
