II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To address basic needs for the rural poor of Ethiopia, and capacity and institution building.
  2. Activities / contents
    There are three area-based programmes in the Ethiopia Country Programme. These are centred on Sidama, Gurage and Eastern Tigray. Support is given primarily to education, health, rural water supply, the provision of rural credit, and agricultural and natural resources. Support is given to the Jimma Institute of Healthy Sciences in the south of the country. Other activities supported include rural road construction, management training, participatory community development and institutional support for local government.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Improvement in the standard of living of the poorest sectors of the Ethiopian population in the three regions concerned.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The Ethiopia Country Programme is in line with the policies set out in "Challenges and Opportunities Abroad: White Paper on Foreign Policy" published by the Government of Ireland in 1996.
