II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
The objective of the project is to create employment and self-employment opportunities for vulnerable groups in the economically underdeveloped regions of the four Central Provinces in Mozambique. Following the lengthy civil war, the project started in 1994 as a job creation program for demobilized soldiers. As of July 1998, the target group has been expanded to include other disadvantaged groups within the local population.
  2. Activities / contents
The project provides employment subsidies and other incentives on a contractual basis to local partners to create employment opportunities. Local partners include national and international NGO's, public institutions and private enterprises. To date, the project has entered into nearly 300 micro-project agreements and created over 7,000 employment opportunities.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
By the end of the project it is expected that a total of 550 micro-project agreements will have been concluded and have led to the creation of over 10,000 employment opportunities. These activities will have assisted in the reconstruction of the rural economy of central Mozambique.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The project aims to raise rural incomes and standards of living.
