I. Basic data
|
II. Project / program description
- Objectives
The long term objective of the project is to contribute towards an improvement of the nutritional status of children under five covered by the Community Infant Programme in peri-urban areas of Angola which have been devastated by years of civil war and where poverty, unemployment and malnutrition are widespread. - Activities / contents
The project will provide two meals per day to children attending Community Infant Programme Centres (CIP) and through its function as a day-care facility, provide improved opportunities to their mothers to pursue income-generating activities. A total of 60,000 children under five from the poorest layers of society, as well as some 1,200 community volunteers, will receive food assistance over a period of 18 months in a total of 300 CIP centres. The food commitment for the project totals 8,035 metric tons. - Expected outcomes / impacts
The project will benefit from similar pre-conflict development projects and build on existing expertise of previous administrative structures. Regular attendance at the day care centres will, in addition to improved nutritional status, provide an opportunity for the regular monitoring of the health status of under-five children, thereby improving the chances to grow up healthily. Furthermore, the children will receive pre-school education, which will increase the likelihood of their entering primary school. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The present project is in line with the agenda for action in areas of poverty alleviation, education, prerequisites for development, conflict prevention and post-conflict development.
