The protracted civil war in Liberia has severely disrupted the socio-economic fibre of the country resulting in over 80% of the population being without full gainful employment. Consequently, the Government of Liberia together with UNDP, Trickle Up Programme and UNV have embarked on a programme for the economic empowerment of the displaced in Liberia through support of small-scale income-generating activities (IGA).
- Objectives
- Promote small grant schemes to internally displaced ex-combatants, and other vulnerable groups (particularly women) in Liberia who can work their way out of poverty by creating their own business enterprises.
- Strengthen the administrative/managerial capacity of national NGOs to implement IGA programmes and develop a stronger network of local NGOs.
- Activities/contents
- Provide micro-grants to support the creation of viable micro-enterprises that benefit vulnerable groups.
- Conduct programme administration for National partners and start your own business workshops.
- Expected outcomes / impacts
- The introduction of an expanded micro-grant programme.
- Co-ordinated inputs and efforts of UNDP, TUP and UNV to reach groups typically outside more conventional financial instruments.
- New opportunities created for employment and income generation activities for the vulnerable groups.
- Features in line with the Agenda for Action
Contribution to the priority areas of focus - poverty reduction and conflict prevention.
