II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    The primary objective of the Zambia Country Programme is poverty alleviation through support for the essential social sectors such as health, education, water, sanitation as well as income generation; support is also given through capacity building at community, local and national level in order to maximise the capacity and involvement of the Zambian people in their own development.
  2. Activities / contents
    There is one area-based programme namely, Northern Province where we are involved in twelve Districts. This programme consists of a number of related components, such as water supply and sanitation, basic health care, primary education and urban upgrading and support is given by grant aid and technical assistance.
    Another key area of support in the Country Programme is helping extremely poor urban communities (high-density settlements composed of temporary dwellings with no water, sewerage services or other basic infrastructure). Support is being given to local authorities to provide water, health, education, sanitation and the means for income generation. Community empowerment and capacity building are fundamental principles of these initiatives.
    Other projects include maternity clinics in the Copperbelt, the development of medical laboratory services, public sector reform, hotel and tourism training, support for the Bank of Zambia and small enterprise development.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Improvement in the standard of living of the poorest sections of the Zambian population in the areas which we support;
    Empowerment and capacity building at community, local and national levels contributing directly to economic growth and helping sustainability.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The Zambia Country Programme is in line with the policies set out in "Challenges and Opportunities Abroad: White Paper on Foreign Policy" published by the Government of Ireland in 1996.
