- Objectives
The primary objective of the Tanzania Country Programme is poverty alleviation through direct support for basic needs through development at rural District level and more recently in urban communities; support is also given through capacity building at community, local and national level in order to maximise the capacity and involvement of the Tanzanian people in their development. - Activities / contents
The components of the Programme are District-level rural development, support for local government reform, agriculture/natural resources, education, health, human rights and democratization and support for national capacity building initiatives (including tourism training).
The impact of grassroots/District level support - in the fields of basic education, health care, agriculture, poverty reduction, capacity building and good governance - is being reinforced through support at national level to the Government of Tanzania's sectoral reforms in education, health, local government reform and agriculture (research and extension). The new National Poverty Eradication Strategy is also being supported.
The Country Programme is strongly based on the principle and practice of participatory development, including community participation. Support to human rights and democratization is targeted at increasing both people's awareness of their human and civic rights and the accountability of State institutions to their citizens. - Expected outcomes / impacts
