II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    Support the Government's programme to revitalize the rural economy through the rehabilitation of the roads network in priority districts.
  2. Activities / contents
    • Contribute to help improve agricultural production by providing access to market and extension services.
    • Improve access to primary schooling, health facilities and better sanitation in rural areas.
    • Increase rural employment through the use of labour-intensive methods of road construction.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    • Feeder road reconstruction and maintenance (99% of the WFP commitment). WFP assistance will be provided to the feeder roads programme only in the food-deficit districts and will assist in the reconstruction of 2,100 kilometres of roads. This project is expected to generate employment for 5,275,000 workdays annually.
    • Rehabilitation of primary schools, health posts and water facilities.
    • Contribute to the construction of schools, health posts, staff houses, wells and boreholes, latrines and so on.
