II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    1. to improve the district's self-sufficiency in food and the living standards of the Turkana people
    2. to maintain an ecological balance between resources and demand on these resources, reduce the rate of desertification through conservation of soil and water, maintain a desirable biomass and tropical livestock units per person ratio in Turkana.
  2. Activities / contents
    The project aims at improving availability of clean water for domestic use, enhancing food security and economic self-reliance, assisting education through the construction of classrooms and boarding facilities, strengthening communal and socio-economic infrastructure, and promoting income generating activities.
    The project gives the highest priority to integrated livestock development, including a provision for monetizing a small portion of WFP food for limited destocking and restocking activities. A substantial component of access dirt roads is included to increase access of the pastoral communities to livestock services and food-for-work sites. Other food-for-work activities are mainly related to soil conservation and the prevention of soil degradation through planting shrubs and trees and conservation of moisture and water. Intensive training and demonstration to support other project components are in-built.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The project expected outcomes, through food-for-work activities, are the following:
    • Creation of socio-economic infrastructure, including public works and access roads;
    • establishment of water development and soil conservation schemes;
    • establishment of training and demonstration centres and provision of training on objectives related to activities.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This WFP project is in line with the Agenda for action, as it covers one of its topics, i.e. poverty alleviation.
