II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    • To assist the forestry department in reducing or eliminating the existing backlogs in replanting of harvested areas and in urgently needed silvicultural operations;
    • to facilitate the spread of extension forestry into semi-arid area for the benefit of agro-pastoralists and small-scale farmers;
    • to promote forestry among the rural poor as a source of income and employment.
  2. Activities / contents
    Through the distribution of food for work rations the project develops hilltop plantations on trust land and on private small-farmers lands. It sets-up tree nurseries and forestry activities are encouraged and supported at the community level. In addition to providing fuel-wood, poles and timber, this project leads to improved environmental protection. WFP food assistance is provided as part payment of wages to temporary workers involved in government forestry activities and as an incentive to pastoralists and small scale farmers to undertake self-help works.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Over 2.5 million work-days will be spent in the activities described above over a period of 5 years.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This project is in line with the agenda for action as it covers one of its topics, i.e. environmental protection.
