- Objectives
To improve the food security, to increase school enrolment with particular emphasis on girls, to promote a better health and nutrition status of women and small children and finally to contribute to a good food supply emergency preparedness system. - Activities / contents
Support through FFW (food for work) for small scale projects aiming at establishing irrigated agriculture schemes, other locally initiated activities to increase agricultural production and to protect the environment against desertification; Provision of food to school canteens to increase school enrolment and to give dry rations to those families which send their girls to school on a regular basis; Distribution of food rations at community health centres to women to encourage them participate at information sessions on health and nutrition matters for themselves and their small children;
Contribution of food for the national emergency food stock or directly for utilisation in droughts and other food supply emergencies occurring from time to time in certain areas. - Expected outcomes / impacts
A gradually improved food security for the most vulnerable population living in the North with diminished dependence on good rainfall every year. In case of serious rainfall failure the emergency food relief will be in a better position to provide timely and targeted assistance. Increased rate of school enrolment particularly for children of nomads and for girls. Better health and nutritional status in women and young children. Lower infant mortality. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The Mali Country Programme activities are in line with the Agenda for Action areas such as poverty alleviation for the poor peasant families in the North promoting their social and economic development through increased agricultural production, higher level of primary school enrolment/attendance and better health and nutritional status.
