II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    The objectives of the programme are multifaceted but can be grouped into the following two broad categories:
    The development of human resources through the reinforcement of the education system and through improved access by mothers and children to health and nutritional services;
    Environmental conservation and improvement of the living conditions and food security.
  2. Activities / contents
    Provision of food to canteens serving mixed primary schools and secondary school hostels for girls.
    Provision of a nutritional supplement, specially prepared in Senegal, for malnourished children taken to community nutrition centres.
    FFW (food for work) in the area of garbage removal and other sanitation activities.
    FFW to promote local community forestry activities.
    FFW to encourage small scale irrigation for increasing agricultural production.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    To contribute to the government objective of boosting primary school enrolment to 80 percent by year 2003 (82.5 percent boys and 79.3 percent girls).
    To improve the nutritional status of children aged 6 months to 3 years in poor urban areas which and later also in poor rural areas.
    Help rehabilitate municipal sanitation services and at the same time create jobs for poor inhabitants.
    Improved environmental protection and rural development through forestry activities.
    Improvement of food self sufficiency through increased environmentally compatible production.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    All the programme activities strive to combat poverty and to promote social development through assistance in the education and health sectors.
