- Objectives
The overarching goal of the project is to develop sustainable and participatory approaches to biodiversity conservation within agricultural systems. The aim is to obtain replicable results that can be used as forming the basis for policy development and implementation for achieving food security while protecting biodiversity. - Activities / contents
The project has established 'demonstration sites' where sustainable and conservationist resource-use strategies are worked out and implemented in participation with stakeholders, particularly the farmers themselves. The project integrates scientific and community social information, and provides capacity building. - Expected outcomes / impacts
1) To establish historical and baseline comparative information on agrobiodiversity
2) To develop participatory and sustainable models of biodiversity management.
3) To recommend approaches and policies to governments, farmers and practitioner
4) To establish national and regional networks for capacity strengthening. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
1) Ownership: The project takes a participatory approach and is owned by the stakeholders.
2) Regional impact: UNU/PLEC operates in five countries in West and East Africa
3) South-South networking: Links to project clusters in Asia and Latin America provide for mutual learning and exchange of lessons.
