- Objectives:
Introduction GMPs and HACCP in the fish processing enterprises to meet E.U. quality requirements. Follow-up project to project XA/SEN/93/613 Techno-Economic Study on the Capacities and Needs of the Fish Industry in Senegal for the Establishment of a Range of New Products with a budget of US$ 286,000. - Activities / contents:
- Strengthening of the support institutions (training, laboratory, inspection).
- Introduction of GMPs in three fish processing plants, implementation of the HACCP plan in 6 plants.
Specific training materials were produced locally. - Expected outcomes / impacts:
As a result of the two projects the fish inspection and quality control services in Senegal were approved by the EU commission concerned. The example of Senegal was used successfully also in Mauritania, where a similar project was carried out. A project proposal is being prepared for the African countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean, building on these experiences and relying on south-south co-operation.
In this respect, a regional workshop will be carried out in Morocco in September 1998 on Fish Safety/Quality Requirements and Market Challenge. This is a crucial step towards the implementation of the UNIDO approach and strategy for the introduction of GMPs and HACCP in the African fish industry to increase its competitiveness in order to meet the market requirements. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action:
Regional co-operation.
The participants of the above workshop will come up with a package of concrete and appropriate measures and guidelines for the introduction and dissemination of GMPs and HACCP in the African fish industry, relying as much as possible on the experience and expertise of the Region.
