II. Project / program description
Objectives
The programme will raise household and rural incomes through support to traditional cash crops and other income-generating activities. The overall standard of living of benefiting smallholder families will be improved through support for the provision of clean water and sanitation, basic healthcare services, nutrition training and transport linkages. Self-lead community participation is the central element for ensuring sustainability for community services and production activities.
Activities
(a) Community Development for 1200 community organisation to develop the skills for self-lead activities and training of District support staff;
(b) Support for the development of rural finance, through skills enhancement for existing credit groups, the provision of incremental credit, support to a local NGO, and training of new credit beneficiaries;
(c) Health and nutrition support will include strengthening of infrastructure, health management capacity building, credit to support the provision of pharmaceutical drugs locally and technical assistance;
(d) Water and sanitation activities will upgrade facilities for 80 villages, 47 schools, 18 health centres;
(e) Rural roads and tracks for 1430 km and a link road to Lake Albert;
(f) Capacity building for the implementing agency and local administration as well as strengthening of the revenue raising capacity at the sub-country and parish level.
Expected outputs / Beneficiaries
Approximately 255,000 households (representing 80% of the population) living in the district of Hoima, Kibaale and Kabarole districts will benefit from the programme. Activities are targeted principally at women and children members of the rural communities, and smallholders with very small plots of land.
