II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    Increased the availability of trained African managers in the agricultural and rural development sector and to improve the effectiveness of project implementation by:
    (i) enhancing the organizational and managerial skills of project management staff, and members of governmental and non-governmental agencies who are involved or who play a role in executing projects, through their participation in AMTA training activities organized and hosted by national training institutions;
    (ii) increasing the awareness of high-level government officials of general issues, including policy and procedures that affect the implementation of agricultural projects.
  2. Activities / contents
    Train 2600 project management and other senior staff in project implementation management; train 160 national trainers to organize, prepare and deliver short-term courses in project implementation management and strengthen the capacity of 20 national training institutions which in the long run should insert the AMTA training package in their regular training offer; and sensitize 1200 high- and senior- level government officials. It is envisaged that another 1400 people in management from both non-participating and participating countries would learn new management skills and techniques through: (a) the programme's promotional activities (500) and (b) the incorporation of the AMTA training package in the annual calendar of training activities of the strengthened national training institutions (900).
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The programme will institutionalize tailor-made project implementation management training in Africa which it is intended will be self-financing in the medium to long-term. It will strengthen 20 local national training institutions, and improve the capability and quality of the training delivery of 160 national trainers.
