- Objectives
(i) To increase productivity of cassava on small farms
(ii) To identify and test natural enemies of the Cassava Green Mite
(iii) To train national staff in bio-control techniques
(iv) To develop national capacity to produce, release and monitor bio-control agents - Activities / contents
Predator mites (Typhodromalus ampo), is to be multiplied and released in cassava growing areas of affected countries with the collaboration of national staff. Farmers will be involved in monitoring the performance of the agents and impact on crop yields. - Expected outcomes / impacts
Cassava yields are expected to return to levels achieved prior to the accidental introduction of CGM from Latin America. Yield could double in some areas. National scientists and extensionists will be able to replicate the project. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
To help raise living standards in cassava growing areas, improve household food and income security as well as strengthen national institutions.
