II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To improve the standard of living of the fishermen and to increase foreign exchange earnings for the country by increasing fish export through the development of fishing infrastructure.
  2. Activities / contents
    The project will construct water supply networks, wharves, and access roads to the fishing sites; will provide refrigeration units, repair workshops, power supplies, loading and off-loading terminals, administrative offices, enhanced credit schemes to fishermen, and training for fishermen and the staff of the Ministry of Fisheries in loan management, accounting, maintenance, fish catches management and fishing techniques.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    At the completion of the project, fish production in the project area is expected to reach 7,700 tons per year. The total revenue of fishermen in the area is expected to increase from the present negligible level to about Birr 58 million. Total net income will amount to nearly Birr 25 million, an average income of Birr 20,000 per fisherman. D. Features in line with the Agenda for Action The project is expected to contribute to export growth and alleviation of poverty.
