II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To contribute to the solution of food problems in Sub-Saharan Africa
    (The introduction and expansion of rice production utilizing food aid)
  2. Activities / contents
    (1) Development of arable land and small scale irrigation system in swamp areas
    (Development project by WFP)
    (2) Extension of rice cultivation
    (Human resource development by WARDA)
    (3) Breeding of suitable rice variety
    (New rice variety breeding jointly by JIRCAS* and WARDA)
    (4) Establishment of cooperative agricultural management system
    (Establishment of farmer's organization supported by AICAF*)
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    This program will contribute to food security in African countries through contributing to sustainable growth of food and agricultural production.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    As emphasized in the Agenda for Action, agricultural development is very important for poverty reduction and food security in Africa. This program will contribute to achieving these goals through improving the productivity of agriculture.
