Project Title
‘Enhancing Livelihood in Post-Conflict Liberia Through Rebuilding Capacity for Rice Production’ Project

(i) National Agricultural Research and Extension Services and NGOs benefited from an updated knowledge scheme and skills in seed production techniques, dissemination and Community-Based Seed System (CBSS). (ii) Eighteen technicians from three counties, namely Bong, Lofa and Nimba, were trained in NERICA seeds production. The training included practical modules in rice physiology, varietal identification and maintenance, and concept of plant breeding and planning for seed multiplication. (iii) Direct beneficiaries of the project are smallholder farm families, including many women and formerly displaced persons. (iv) The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice), a leading international agricultural research institute based in Cotonou, Benin, is providing support to the Central Agricultural Research Institute, the Ministry of Agriculture, and NGOs through capacity building and provision of breeder and foundation seeds. (v) Under the UNTFHS, 60 tons of certified seeds of 12 upland and lowland varieties have been provided to FAO to contribute to the short-term restoration of food security for vulnerable households.
