Japan-Mauritius Relations

On August 20, commencing at 11:02a.m., for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his desire to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” together with Mauritius, which shares fundamental values and principles. In response, Prime Minister Ramgoolam stated that he was delighted to visit Japan again and that he wished to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Japan and Mauritius, including the cooperation in the international arena.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his respect for the signing of the Agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Mauritius concerning the Chagos Archipelago including Diego Garcia, In response, Prime Minister Ramgoolam expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support in the field of maritime security and expressed his desire to continue close cooperation with Japan to further strengthen bilateral relations, including in the business sector. Prime Minister Ramgoolam also stated that he was pleased to announce the opening of the Embassy of Mauritius in Japan, and Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his welcome for the opening of the embassy.
  3. The two leaders also concurred to further strengthening cooperation in responding to various international challenges, such as the United Nations Security Council reform.
