Statements by the Press Secretary

September 12, 2026
  1. Since the Houthis in the Republic of Yemen declared a naval blockade against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on July 20, the Houthis’ continued military attacks have resulted in numerous casualties including among civilians. Japan renews its strong denunciation of the recent series of attacks by the Houthis. Attacks on civilians and civilian facilities, as well as any actions that impede the free and safe navigation of vessels, cannot be tolerated. We reiterate our strong call on the Houthis to refrain from escalating the situation both inside and outside Yemen.
  2. The stability in Yemen is directly linked to the stability of the entire Middle East, and Japan reiterates the importance of achieving peace in Yemen. Furthermore, Peace and stability in the Middle East, including ensuring the free and safe navigation through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, are of the utmost importance to the entire international community, including Japan, from the perspective of energy security as well. Japan will continue to make every diplomatic effort, in cooperation with the international community, including Yemen and Saudi Arabia, toward an early de-escalation of the situation.
