  1. Japan welcomes the decision to remove Mr. Khan as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which was made on July 24 at the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC following a vote by the States Parties. Despite his position requiring him to be a person of high moral character, the series of conducts undertaken by the said Prosecutor most be seen to have undermined the credibility of the ICC.
  2. For taking the view point that such extremely regrettable situation should be rectified appropriately at the earliest possible opportunity, Japan has actively contributed to discussions as a member of the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties. Japan regards the Assembly’s decision as a case of the Assembly of States Parties having functioned appropriately in accordance with the procedures set out under the Rome Statute.
  3. The ICC is the world's only permanent international criminal tribunal. In order for the ICC to gain the trust of the international community, it is important for ICC Prosecutor to carry out the duties properly, and for the ICC and States Parties to address the challenges facing the ICC in a thorough manner, so that the Court is administered appropriately. Japan, for its part, will continue to fulfill its role as a State Party,participating in relevant discussions.
