On October 22, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Ricky F. Cantero, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), who is visiting Japan.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Secretary Cantero’s visit to Japan, and stated that Japan and the FSM share fundamental values and principles and are important partners in maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and that he would like to further develop bilateral relations with the FSM, taking the opportunity of the current visit to Japan by President Simina and Secretary Cantero.
  2. Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI expressed, based on the concept of the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”, his intention to provide concrete support for the “resilience” and the “freedom to decide for themselves” of Pacific Island countries including the FSM. In response, Secretary Cantero expressed his gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for Japan's support and cooperation across a wide range of fields to date.
  3. The two Ministers exchanged views on regional affairs in the Indo-Pacific, including the response to North Korea, and confirmed that they will work closely together toward the success of the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11), which is scheduled to be held in Yokohama city in the summer of next year, as well as the PALM Ministerial Interim Meeting scheduled to be held in Fiji prior to it.
