Holding of the First Japan-Australia Leadership Dialogue
On October 8, the First Japan-Australia Leadership Dialogue was held in Tokyo. The launch of this Dialogue was concurred by leaders of Japan and Australia during the visit to Australia by Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan in May of this year.
- This dialogue was co-chaired by Mr. Michiaki HIROSE, Senior Corporate Advisor at Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (Chairman, Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee) from Japanese side, and Mr. Stephen Smith, former Foreign Minister and Defence Minister, from Australian side. Along with prominent experts from various sectors of both countries, the participants engaged in a candid exchange of views, including on the further potential and prospects of Japan-Australia cooperation and roles both countries should play in the region beyond the bilateral relationship.
- In the first session, under the theme of “Helping to secure a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific”, discussions were held on further strengthening and developing cooperation between Japan and Australia, including in the area of security, as well as the roles that Japan and Australia should play to support regional autonomy and resilience.
- In the second session, under the theme “Pathways to greater economic and energy cooperation and prosperity”, participants discussed opportunities for new cooperation in the economic and economic security fields, including strengthening resilience in the economic and energy sectors, building on the close and complementary economic relationship between Japan and Australia.
- In the third session, under the theme “Innovation partnerships for the Future”, discussions focused on initiatives to deepen cooperation and collaboration in the field of innovation and to create new opportunities for people-to-people and business exchanges between the two countries.
- Both co-chairs concurred to continue working closely together to further deepen mutual understanding and intellectual exchange between Japan and Australia, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the mid to long-term cooperative relationship between the two countries.
(Reference1) Japan-Australia Leadership Dialogue
The Japan-Australia Leadership Dialogue was launched in May of this year, following an agreement between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, seizing the opportunity of this year’s 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. Its purpose is to deepen mutual understanding and intellectual exchange thereby strengthening the mid to long-term cooperative relationship between the two countries.
This Dialogue is a framework held annually, alternating between Japan and Australia. It brings together stakeholders from various fields in Japan and Australia depending on the annual themes to discuss the future vision of the broad Japan-Australia relationship, including the political and economic fields.
