G7 Leaders’ Online Meeting regarding the global energy situation (including responses to diesel prices in the US, Europe, and other countries)

On October 3, commencing at 9:30 p.m. (Japan time), for approximately 30 minutes, the G7 Leaders’ Online Meeting regarding the global energy situation (including responses to diesel prices in the US, Europe, and other countries) was held under the chairmanship of France, which holds this year’s G7 Presidency. Mr. ENDO Kazuya, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan participated in the meeting on behalf of Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows
- During this meeting, the G7 leaders discussed measures to address the serious challenges to energy security caused by the conflict in the Middle East and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
- Senior Deputy Minister ENDO read out a statement on behalf of Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae, the summary is as follows:
- In light of the current situation in the Middle East, Japan took the initiative in March to decide on the release of oil stockpiles to help stabilize energy supplies for the world, in particular for Asia. Japan also contributed to the realization of the IEA's largest-ever collective release of a total of over 400 million barrels. Japan has already released oil stockpiles equivalent to over 100 million barrels, exceeding its allocated quota.
- From the perspective of ensuring energy security and market stability, Japan has already launched the “Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia (POWERR Asia)” back in April as a cooperative framework to strengthen energy and resource supply resilience, with a focus on Asia.
- In addition to these concrete initiatives, Japan has been calling on the international community, including at the G7 Evian Summit, to focus on three pillars for ensuring global energy security; Ensuring free and transparent energy trade; International cooperation on oil stockpiles, including cooperation with the IEA; and enhanced cooperation between producing and consuming countries.
- Through these initiatives, Japan will continue to serve as a nexus of global supply chains and provide cooperation toward strengthening global economic and energy resilience and calls on the G7 members to fulfill their respective responsibilities and make contributions.
- The G7 leaders agreed to work in close coordination in addressing global energy security and market stability.
