State Minister for Foreign Affairs HORII’s attendance at the G20 Trade Ministerial Meeting (Results)
October 2, 2026
From September 30 to October 1, Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan together with Mr. MIYAMOTO Shuji, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, attended the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting held in Milwaukee, United States, hosted by the United States, this year's G20 Presidency.
- At the meeting, active discussions took place under the four themes set by the United States, this G20 Presidency: (1) Weaponization of Food through Coercive Trade Action, (2) Structural Excess Capacity and Production, (3) Most Favored Nation (MFN) Principle and (4) Eliminating Forced Labor in Global Supply Chains.
- State Minister HORII made the following statements and contributed to the discussions at the meeting:
- Arbitrary restrictions on food trade should not be tolerated as tool of pressure to achieve political objectives. It is necessary to combine various initiatives to address the weaponization of food, including diversifying supply chains and rectifying regulations on food imports and exports that lack scientific basis.
- The MFN principle has played important roles, including ensuring the stability of the multilateral trading system. At the same time, the international economic order is facing problems such as overproduction, and ensuring a level playing field becomes an urgent issue. Discussions on challenges in the international economic order have been deepening within frameworks such as the WTO and Japan will advance discussions to improve and strengthen the order.
- Respect for human rights in global supply chains, including the elimination of forced labor, is indispensable to ensuring the stability of supply chains and achieving sustainable economic growth. Japan will continue to contribute through various approaches, including support for companies in coordination with international organizations.
