Statement by Mr. SUGIURA Masatoshi, Ambassador, Director-General / Assistant Minister for Global Issues in GPE’s Event

On September 23 at 2:30 PM local time (September 24 at 3:30 AM Japan time), while visiting New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. SUGIURA Masatoshi, Ambassador, Director-General / Assistant Minister for Global Issues, attended the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) meeting “Multiply Possibility High Level Event: A New Era for Education Financing” and delivered a statement. This session was held to raise funds for GPE, which supports basic education in developing countries.
- In his statement, Ambassador SUGIURA underscored that Japan positions education as an "investment in people" to realize human security and has long promoted international cooperation in this field, building on its own experience. He also stated that, at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) held last year, Japan announced its intention to support improved access to quality basic education through GPE.
- Furthermore, he stated that Japan contributed a total of 1.06 billion yen to GPE this year. He also announced that Japan would contribute to strengthening sustainable financing in partner countries, including cooperation through JICA.
