Japan-Nepal Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On August 31, commencing at 8:15 p.m. Japan time (1:15 p.m., Central European Time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting the Slovak Republic held a telephone call with H.E. Mr. Shisir Khanal, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his condolences for the victims of the flash floods and landslides that occurred on the 26th in the areas near the Nepal-China border, and conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to their families and to all those affected by the disaster. He reiterated Japan’s solidarity with Nepal, expressed his deep respect to the Government and people of Nepal for their resilience in the face of this difficult situation and conveyed that Japan would spare no effort to provide all necessary assistance, and stated that Japan stands with Nepal.
- Minister MOTEGI also requested Nepal’s cooperation for the swift search and rescue efforts for the five Japanese nationals who remain unaccounted for.
- Regarding assistance provided by Japan, Minister MOTEGI reiterated that the Government of Japan had decided to provide emergency relief goods, including tents and blankets and that Japan is preparing and considering providing support, such as contribution to international organizations or the dispatch of a Japan Disaster Relief Team.
- In response, Minister Khanal expressed his deep appreciation for the message of sympathy, expression of solidarity and assistance from the Government and people of Japan. He also expressed that the Government of Nepal would make every effort to locate and rescue those who remain missing, including the five Japanese nationals, and would closely coordinate with the international community, including Japan.
