Vice Minister FUNAKOSHI’s Travel to the United States

On August 27th and 28th, Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, held an exchange of views with the Honorable Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States of America among others.

  1. On August 27th, Vice-Minister FUNAKOSHI held a Japan-U.S. Vice-Ministers’ Meeting with Deputy Secretary Landau.
    1. In light of the current international situation, the two sides exchanged views broadly on Japan-U.S. cooperation, particularly in the fields of security, economy and economic security. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. Alliance, based on the outcomes of Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit to the United States in March.
    2. They exchanged views on regional situations in the Indo-Pacific, such as issues related to China, the policies toward North Korea, including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issues, and confimred that Japan and the United States would continue to coordinate closely.Vice-Minister FUNAKOSHI expressed his appreciation for the consistent support from the U.S. government regarding the abductions issue as confirmed by Deputy Secretary Landau.
    3. The two sides exchanged views on the situation surrounding Iran. Vice-Minister FUNAKOSHI emphasized the importance of de-escalating the situation as soon as possible and ensuring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides concurred to continue close communication.
    4. In addition, the two sides discussed the FOIP, cooperation among like-minded countries such as Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and other issues.
  2. During his visit to the United States, Vice-Minister FUNAKOSHI also exchanged views with Mr.Michael Needham, Deputy National Security Advisor to the President of the United States. The two sides exchanged views broadly in light of the current international affairs, including on furthering close cooperation between Japan and the United States and regional situations
