Japan-Chile Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 28, commencing at 11:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Francisco Pérez Mackenna, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Foreign Minister Pérez's visit to Japan and stated that Chile is a strategic partner, and that bilateral cooperation has been advancing in a wide range of fields such as economy, disaster prevention, astronomy, science and technology, and defense. In response, Foreign Minister Pérez stated that he wished to further develop the bilateral relationship towards the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027. Minister Pérez expressed his hope for President Kast’s visit to Japan, and Minister MOTEGI responded that both governments would continue to coordinate the schedule for its realization and looked forward to a frank exchange of views between the two leaders.
- Minister MOTEGI welcomed the progress of concrete cooperation with Chile, a supplier of critical minerals, towards strengthening supply chains under the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”. In response, Foreign Minister Pérez expressed his desire to strengthen economic relations by introducing Japan's advanced technology and increasing added value of products. The two ministers confirmed that they would strengthen strategic relations promoting concrete cooperation especially in the field of economic security including critical minerals.
- In addition, the two ministers exchanged views on the situation in East Asia and confirmed that they would continue to cooperate closely in the international arena.
