Japan-Ukraine Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On August 25, commencing at 4:50 p.m., Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Andrii SYBIHA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, for approximately 20 minutes.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI conveyed his congratulations on the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and expressed his heartfelt condolences regarding the fact that, four and a half years after the aggression , many people have lost their lives and suffered great harm as a result of the fighting in Ukraine.
- Minister MOTEGI, also stated that unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force must not be tolerated anywhere in the world, and that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is an outrageous act that shakes the very foundations of the international order. Minister MOTEGI further stated that as Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, mentioned on the Leaders Meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine on the 24th, he reaffirmed that Japan would work to support Ukraine and impose sanctions against Russia, and would continue to stand with Ukraine and that Japan’s position would never waver.
- Minister MOTEGI also stated that the partnership between Japan and Ukraine is extremely robust and that Japan would continue to provide support tailored to the situation and needs of Ukraine. Minister MOTEGI added that Japan is willing to continue to promote mutually beneficial cooperation with Ukraine in the security sector.
- Minister SYBIHA expressed his renewed gratitude for the various assistance that Japan has provided to Ukraine, and briefed Minister MOTEGI on the current situation in Ukraine.
- The two ministers concurred that they would continue to work closely together including the situation in Ukraine.
