August 19, 2026
On August 19, Mr. OKUBO Takeshi, Ambassador in charge of Gaza Rebuilding Assistance, held an online meeting with Dr. Ali Shaath, Chief Commissioner of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). Ms. MITSUI Yuko, Senior Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), also attended the meeting.
- Chief Commissioner Shaath explained that the NCAG, in coordination with the U.S. Government and the Palestinian Authority, is working toward the implementation of the “Comprehensive Plan,” including its efforts for Gaza rebuilding in line with the “Roadmap,” on which the “Board of Peace” announced that it reached an agreement with Hamas at the end of July. He also expressed his appreciation for Japan’s assistance to Palestine, as well as his expectations for Japan’s continuous role in this regard.
- Ambassador OKUBO welcomed this agreement as a significant progress toward the Gaza rebuilding and stated that Japan strongly expects the implementation of this agreement in a steady manner without delay, while continuing to closely monitor developments. He also stated that Japan would continue to play an active role, in coordination with relevant countries and organizations, in order to promote the implementation of the “Comprehensive Plan” and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.
- Both sides concurred on launching a working group between Japan and NCAG on the rebuilding of Gaza, and on continuing to coordinate closely.
