Adoption of the Resolution on Elimination of Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy/Hansen’s Disease and Their Family Members at the 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council

On July 7 (local time), at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the resolution on elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy/Hansen’s disease and their family members, jointly submitted by Japan, Brazil, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, India, Kyrgyz, Morocco, was adopted by consensus.

  1. The resolution aims to ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by persons affected by leprosy/Hansen’s disease and their family members worldwide and to eliminate discrimination and prejudice that hinder their equal participation in society. To this end, it promotes the dissemination and implementation of the principles and guidelines for the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy/Hansen’s disease and their family members through periodic follow-up by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
  2. Japan will continue to actively promote efforts toward the elimination of discrimination and prejudice related to leprosy/Hansen’s disease in the international community.

Since 2008, Japan has been the penholder of the resolutions on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy/Hansen’s disease and their family members at the Human Rights Council. Including the present resolution, eight such resolutions have been submitted by Japan and adopted by consensus (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2023 and 2026).
