Japan-Marshall Islands Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On July 3, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for 35 minutes. Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Minister’s Meeting with Hon. Kalani R. KANEKO, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), during his visit to Japan.

  1. At the outset, Minister Motegi stated that Japan and RMI are friends connected by the Pacific Ocean and share fundamental values and principles. He expressed his intention to closely cooperate with RMI in a wide range of areas.
  2. The two Ministers confirmed the importance of steadily implementing concrete efforts to enhance the autonomy and resilience in the Indo-Pacific region based on the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP),” while strategic environment in the region has become increasingly severe.
  3. Minister Motegi stated that Japan intends to promote cooperation while listening tothe needs of RMI. The two Ministers concurred on working closely together toward the success of the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11), which is scheduled to be held in Yokohama city around next summer.
  4. The two Ministers also exchanged views on the situation in East Asia – including the responses to North Korea, such as its nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue - as well as the situation in the Middle East.
