Japan-Saudi Arabia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On July 2, commencing at 5:15 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his condolences over the loss of lives of the 14 people on board the Saudi Aramco helicopter that crashed on June 28. Minister MOTEGI also stated his hope that discussions between the United States and Iran, in line with the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two countries, would make steady progress, leading to the early realization of a final agreement on matters such as Iran’s nuclear issue as well as ensuring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in a lasting manner.

Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan would continue to make every possible effort toward peace and stability throughout the Middle East, including the fostering of an environment conducive to reaching a final agreement. Minister MOTEGI also added that Japan intends to play an active role in strengthening the resilience of the region, including Saudi Arabia, through recovery and reconstruction efforts.
  3. In response, Minister Faisal explained its views on ensuring medium- to long-term peace and stability in the Middle East in light of the current situation, and its outlook for the U.S.-Iran talks.
  4. Both Ministers confirmed the importance of the international community speaking with one voice to ensure the restoration of free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without the imposition of additional charges. Both Ministers also concurred to work on advancing concrete bilateral collaboration in the energy sector.
