Dispatch of the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team in Response to the Earthquake Damage in Venezuela

Regarding the response to the Earthquake Damage in Venezuela, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team to the affected area, based on the medical and other needs confirmed through the activity by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assessment team (7 people) since June 26.
Based on this decision, a part of the members of the assessment team who are currently on the ground will commence their activity as the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team, and more members will depart from Japan consecutively. The Team consists of 42 members including staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and JICA, registered medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

The Government of Japan will continue to stand by the people of Venezuela and stands ready to study further necessary assistance, bearing in mid the human security needs.

In Venezuela, a magnitude 7+ earthquake that occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time on Thursday, June 25, caused numerous casualties, including deaths and injuries, and property damage. According to the Venezuelan government's announcement, the damage includes 1,943 deaths, over 10,571 injuries, and over 885 damaged houses, and the full extent of the damage is still unknown (as of July 1).
