Japan-Ukraine Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Working Dinner

On July 1, commencing at 6:15 PM for approximately 115 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting, a joint press announcement and a working dinner with H.E. Mr. Andrii SYBIHA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, who is visiting Japan.

The two ministers also signed and exchanged notes concerning the grant aid project for Human Resource Development Scholarship.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI renewed his respect for the day-to-day efforts of the Ukrainian people, including Minister Sybiha to bring peace to his country, and reiterated that Japan would never waver in its consistent position of standing with Ukraine.
  2. Minister MOTEGI also emphasized the importance of the principled view that attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force should not be tolerated, and that in order to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, Japan would continue to promote support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia in coordination with the international community and would also continue to work on public-private partnership assistance for recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine. Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI conveyed our decision to provide assistance through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a World Heritage site, which sustained damage from Russia’s attacks. In response, Minister Sybiha expressed his gratitude for Japan's consistent support since the beginning of Russia's aggression, and also briefed Minister MOTEGI on the current situation in Ukraine and the various related efforts by Ukraine for realizing a just and lasting peace.
  3. The two ministers concurred on continuing to work closely on strengthening bilateral relations, including in the field of security, and the future situation in Ukraine.
  4. The two ministers exchanged view on the situation in the Indo-Pacific, such as their policies toward North Korea, including on the nuclear and missile issues, the abductions issues, and issued related to China, as well as cooperation in international arena.
