Japan-Kuwait Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On June 29, commencing at 4:40 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait.

  1. At the outset, regarding the current situation surrounding Iran, Minister MOTEGI expressed deep concern over the attacks between the U.S. and Iran that occurred over the weekend, including the attacks launched by Iran against Kuwait. Minister MOTEGI also stated that it is important that memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the United States and Iran is steadily implemented, that free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is ensured in a lasting manner, and that a final agreement on matters including Iran’s nuclear issue is reached as soon as possible.

Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI emphasized that Japan would continue to make every effort to foster atmosphere necessary for a final agreement, in order to realize peace and stability throughout the Middle East region, and that Japan intends to play an active role in the recovery and reconstruction of the region, including Kuwait.
  3. In response, Minister Jarrah explained Kuwait’s position regarding the MoU, including the overview of the U.S.- Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on June 25.
  4. Both Ministers concurred on continuing cooperation to ensure a stable supply of energy as well as peace and stability in the Middle East, including ensuring free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in a lasting manner.
