37th Japan-UNICEF Policy Consultation
On June 25, the 37th Japan-UNICEF Policy Consultation was held in Tokyo.
- The Japanese delegation was headed by Mr. NAKAMURA Ryo, Assistant Minister and Director-General for Global Issues, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the UNICEF delegation was headed by Ms. Kitty van der Heijden, Deputy Executive Director, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
- In light of evolving trends in development cooperation and the international situation, and with a view to strengthening the strategic partnership between Japan and UNICEF, the two sides exchanged views focusing on priority issues. Specifically, discussions covered the realization of universal health coverage (UHC) for all children; cooperation in the areas of green transformation (GX) and disaster risk reduction; as well as strategic topics such as public–private partnerships, innovative financing, and increasing the number of Japanese staff members.
- Japan and UNICEF, which has high visibility, strong advocacy capacity, locally rooted networks and a proven track record, agreed to strengthen follow-up on the strategic issues discussed. It is expected that, under the challenging international environment, Japan and UNICEF will further strengthen and accelerate their collaboration toward achieving the SDGs, guided by the principle of “human security” and grounded in “human dignity.”
