Visit of H.E. Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to Fukushima Prefecture

On 24 June, H.E. Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited Fukushima prefecture during his visit to Japan, reaffirming the cooperation between Japan and the IAEA on Japan’s efforts for the reconstruction of Fukushima.

  1. Visit to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
    Director General Grossi held a meeting with Mr. Tomoaki Kobayakawa, President of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc, at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
    During the meeting, President Kobayakawa briefed Director General Grossi on the progress of decommissioning efforts, including the discharge of ALPS-treated water into the sea, explaining that these efforts have been conducted safely and steadily so far. Director General Grossi also stated that the IAEA will continue to provide Japan with assistance from a technical and expert perspective. The IAEA also confirmed that the discharge of ALPS-treated water into the sea has been conducted safely, and that reviews and monitoring based on international safety standards will continue in the future.
  2. Additional Measures Related to the Discharge of ALPS Treated Water into the Sea
    Director General Grossi presided over the implementation of the additional measures related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea under the IAEA framework. Experts from laboratories from China, the Republic of Korea and Switzerland as well as Director General Grossi conducted seawater sampling in the vicinity of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred on conducting additional measures under the IAEA framework. This time is the nineth mission for conducting the additional measures since October 2024.

  • 4th: June 17, 2025 (collection of ALPS treated water prior to dilution with seawater)
  • 5th: September 9, 2025 (collection of seawater), September 10, 2025 (selection of fishery products)
  • 6th: December 5, 2025 (collection of ALPS treated water diluted with seawater prior to the discharge into the sea)
  • 7th: February 4, 2026 (collection of seawater), February 5, 2026 (selection of fishery products)
  • 8th: May 29, 2026 (collection of ALPS treated water prior to dilution with seawater)
  • 9th: June 24, 2026 (collection of seawater), June 25, 2026 (selection of fishery products)
