Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On June 15, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Dr. Seyyed Abbas ARAGHCHI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.
- Minister MOTEGI welcomed the agreement of a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and iran today as a major step towards the resolution of the situation, and highly commended the efforts of negotiation by relevant countries including Iran.
- Minister MOTEGI further stated that what matters most is that the MoU is steadily implemented and that a final agreement on matters such as Iran’s nuclear issue will be achieved as soon as possible. He emphasized that Japan will continue to play a constructive role toward the realization of peace and stability throughout the Middle East region.
- Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI underscored the importance of ensuring as soon as possible the free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for vessels of all countries including Japan, and strongly requested that the passage of all Japan-related vessels retained in the Persian Gulf be realized as soon as possible.
- In response, Foreign Minister Araghchi explained the course of events leading to the agreement and the outlook of talks between the United States and Iran, as well as Iran’s positions. Both ministers confirmed that they would continue to maintain close communication towards the early realization of a final agreement.
