Japan-U.S.-ROK Trilateral Meeting on North Korea

On June 12, commencing at 2:00 p.m. for approximately 90 minutes, Japan-U.S.- ROK Trilateral Meeting on North Korea was held in Tokyo, where Mr. OTSUKA Kengo, Deputy Director-General, Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a discussion with Mr. David Wilezol, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Japan, Korea and Mongolia, Department of State of the United States of America, and Mr. Kim Sangil, Director For North Korean Nuclear Affairs Policy, Korean Peninsula Policy Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ROK.

  1. They had an in-depth exchange of views and aligned their positions on the current situation surrounding North Korea, and reaffirmed that they would further strengthen communication among the three countries
  2. They expressed their serious concerns over North Korea’s nuclear and missile development, and reaffirmed their commitment toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
  3. They reaffirmed that they would work closely together on issues such as the advancement of Russia-North Korea military cooperation and North Korea’s malicious cyber activities including cryptocurrency thefts, which fund its nuclear and missile programs.
  4. Furthermore, the Japanese side expressed its appreciation for the consistent support from the governments of the U.S. and the ROK regarding the abductions issue.
