Participation of Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation HAYASHI and Director of International Peace Mediation Unit, SAITO, in the Oslo Forum

Mr. HAYASHI Teiji, Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation and Mr. SAITO Masaaki, Director of International Peace Mediation Unit participated in the Oslo Forum, held from June 10 to 11 in Norway. This is the first participation of a representative of the Government of Japan in the Oslo Forum.

At the forum's roundtable on Myanmar, Ambassador HAYASHI served as a contributor and explained Japan's position and initiatives regarding the situation in Myanmar. Taking the opportunity of the Forum, he exchanged views with various peace mediation stakeholders, including Lisa Golden, Deputy Director General, Section Leader, Section for Peace and Reconciliation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway; Tim Enderlin, Head of Peace and Human Rights Division, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland; and Pekka Haavisto, Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan.

The Oslo Forum is a meeting on peace mediation co-hosted by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. It is held annually, inviting key international actors in peace mediation for informal and private discussions. This year, it took place from June 10 to 11.

On March 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan established the International Peace Mediation Unit under the Foreign Policy Bureau of the Ministry. As the international environment becomes increasingly severe and conflicts continue to emerge across the globe, the imperative of preventing disputes before they arise and supporting early resolution by engaging from the outset of conflicts and providing seamless support from the realization of ceasefire through humanitarian assistance, recovery and reconstruction has become ever more pronounced. Through the establishment of the International Peace Mediation Unit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will further strengthen its active and flexible engagement in peace mediation efforts.
