Japan-Thailand Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On June 12, commencing at 3:05 p.m. for 40 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Sihasak PHUANGKETKEOW, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI conveyed condolences on the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha and welcomed Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak on his visit to Japan. He stated that, taking the 140th anniversary of Japan-Thailand diplomatic relations next year as an opportunity, he would work further to strengthen the "Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership" between the two countries and cooperate for countries in the region to enhance their resilience and promote their freedom to decide for themselves under the updated "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)."
- Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan intends to promote cooperation across a wide range of fields, including the field of science and technology, built on the strong economic ties between the two countries, and security. In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak expressed support for the “Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR Asia)”, launched by Ms. TAKAICHI, Prime Minister of Japan, and stated his intention to promote cooperation with Japan in various fields including AI. Also, the Foreign Ministers concurred on promoting cooperation to strengthen regional energy and resource supply chains.
- The Foreign Ministers exchanged views on international affairs such as border issue of Cambodia and Myanmar, as well as the Middle East, regional challenges including the East China Sea and South China Sea, and their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue. They reaffirmed that they would continue to coordinate closely in this regard.
