Japan-Egypt Foreign Ministers' Meeting (Third Strategic Dialogue between Foreign Ministers)

On June 3, commencing at 11:30 p.m. for 45 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held the Third Strategic Dialogue with Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who was visiting Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Two Ministers also signed the " Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt” and the “Memorandum of Cooperation on the Framework for Strategic Partnership between Japan and the Arab Republic of Egypt”.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his pleasure to hold the Third Strategic Dialogue with Minister Abdelatty, an expert of diplomacy who has experience in working at the Egyptian Embassy in Japan. He noted that bilateral relations have developed across a wide range of fields since his visit to Egypt in 2021 during his previous tenure as Foreign Minister, and stated that the signing of the two Memorandums on this occasion carries great significance in further developing the cooperative relationship between the two countries.
- Minister MOTEGI noted that the ministerial telephone talks in April had allowed for a meaningful exchange of views primarily on the situation surrounding Iran, and expressed his intention to engage in thorough discussions during this Strategic Dialogue not only on bilateral cooperation but also on coordination between the two countries toward peace and prosperity across the Middle East region. Both Ministers also concurred to further exchange views on regional and international situations, including the situation in Iran, at the working dinner tomorrow (June 4).
- Minister MOTEGI pointed out the growing interest of Japanese companies in Egypt, including in the field of clean energy such as wind power generation, and commended efforts for improving an enabling business environment and encouraged to continuing and further streamlining procedures for economic cooperation projects. In response, Minister Abdelatty welcomed further investment from Japanese companies and explained that the Egyptian government would work to establish a favorable investment environment to that end.
- Both Ministers welcomed the steady progress in cooperation under the "Egypt-Japan Education Partnership" based on President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's initiative, and agreed to continue strengthening cooperation going forward.
- Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Egypt's participation in GREEN×EXPO 2027 to be held in Yokohama, and both Ministers confirmed their cooperation toward its success.
- Minister MOTEGI touched on the outcomes of his visit to Africa last month, and both Ministers concurred to cooperate toward TICAD 10 which will be held in 2028.
