Exchange of views between Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA and the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) review team

 On May 26, for approximately 20 minutes from 12:00 a.m., Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) review team.

  1. Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA welcomed the visit to Japan by the DAC review team and expressed his hope that the review would deepen the team's understanding of Japan's development cooperation and serve as an opportunity to deepen discussions within the DAC on effective approaches to development cooperation.
  2. In response, the DAC review team commended Japan’s global leadership in promoting the self-reliant development of developing countries, and expressed their anticipation to exchange views with a diverse range of stakeholders involved in development cooperation during this review, as there are many things to learn from Japan's development cooperation, which places emphasis on “quality.”
  3. Taking into account the changing environment surrounding development cooperation in recent years, the two sides concurred that they would continue to work in even closer cooperation going forward.

  1. The OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) plays a central role in shaping international trends in development cooperation through such efforts as formulating international rules and standards on development cooperation and compiling ODA statistics. As of May 2026, the DAC consists of 33 members: 32 of the 38 OECD member countries and the European Union (EU).
  2. Through peer reviews of members' development cooperation policies and implementation, the DAC promotes mutual learning and works to enhance the overall quality of development cooperation across the DAC. Japan is the country under review this year. The review will be conducted in Tokyo from May 25 to 29, with the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea serving as the reviewing countries together with the DAC Secretariat.
