Meeting between Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs ERI and the President of the Eleventh NPT Review Conference

On May 18, commencing at 7:10 a.m. (same day local time 6:10 p.m.), Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, the United States, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Do Hung Viet, President of the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to the United Nations.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI expressed her respect for President Viet’s leadership including his efficient management of the proceedings. She also explained Japan’s initiatives at the Conference and its position regarding the draft outcome document.
- President Viet expressed his appreciation for the support from Japan at the Conference, and the two sides confirmed that they would continue to work closely together toward the success of the Review Conference.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI also had separate meetings with H.E. Mr. Samuel Yao Kumah, Chairperson of Main Committee I of the Review Conference and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations; H.E. Mr. Kairat Umarov, Chairperson of Main Committee II and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations; and H.E. Mr. Pekka Puustinen, Chairperson of Main Committee III and Ambassador for Arms Control at the Foreign Ministry of Finland. During these meetings, she explained Japan’s position and exchanged views on the state of the discussions.
