Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs ERI’s Visit to the United States and Suriname

From May 17 to May 23, Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, will visit the United States and Suriname.

  1. In the United States, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI is scheduled to travel to New York to attend the final week of the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and make every effort to engage in consultations with and outreach to NPT States Parties toward the finalization of a outcome document.
  2. In Suriname, Vice-Minister ERI is scheduled to attend the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as an extra-regional country, deliver a speech on Japan-CARICOM relations, and hold bilateral meetings with other dignitaries from various countries.

(Reference2) Overview of the NPT Review Conference

  1. Date: April 27 to May 22
  2. The State parties of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) hold a Review Conference every five years in accordance with Article 8, paragraph 3 of the Treaty, to review the operation of the Treaty and ensure compliance with its provisions. A preparatory committee is held annually for three years prior to the Review Conference. The previous Review Conference was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was held in August 2022.
