Attendance of Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs ERI at the 11th NPT Review Conference

On May 18, commencing at 10:25 a.m. local time (11:25 p.m. on May 18, Japan time), Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, the United States, attended the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and made remarks as the representative of the Japanese government.
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI stated that Japan appreciates the leadership of the NPT Review Conference President, while noting that at this Conference, many delegations had underscored the importance of the NPT, as the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, as well as their respective commitments to it. She also emphasized that, as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings during war, it is Japan's mission to take the lead in international efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons, and stated Japan’s views on the final document that is currently being tabled.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI pointed out that there remain significant challenges and points of contention that must be addressed in order to bring the discussions to converence and called on all delegations to make further efforts towards building consensus.
